Christmas
, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25 each winter, is one of the most widely celebrated occasions in the world. The snowman, the Christmas tree, Santa Claus, elaborate decorations of the houses and cities, exchanging Christmas gifts, the Christmas eve celebrations and, the Mass, Christmas carols and the very famous mistletoe all form an important part of the modern day celebrations of ‘the day.’ People enjoy the evenings with splendid dinner or feasts with family and friends. Children on this day present a dramatized story of the birth of Jesus in school. ‘Silent night, holy night’ and ‘jingle bells’ are some of the Christmas songs that we still love to sing and have become synonymous with the celebrations.

Every door has the wreath hung on it and every house very fondly decorates the coniferous tree with figurines and collectibles around. Children hang their socks with their wishes written in it and wait for the old good man Santa Claus to fulfill all their demands. Santa Claus or Father Christmas is eagerly awaited and children are taught that he brings presents for all in his sledge pulled by a reindeer. The day after Christmas is celebrated as ‘Boxing Day’ in some countries. Some hundred years ago the church would open their alms’ box and then distribute the money among the poor on the following day of Christmas. The tradition continues, even today people offer gifts to staff and workers.

Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated festivals around the world. In the Greek version of the New Testament, the letter X (chi) is the first letter of Christ so Christmas is also called X-Mas. People buy gifts for each other and send greetings and cards to wish each other a Merry Christmas. There are lots of e-greetings and e-cards that people send to their near and dear ones. Today it is more of a holiday than of celebrating birthday of Jesus Christ or the Messiah. Jesus was born to Virgin Mary. An angel told her in a dream that a special child would be born to her. In her nativity Mother Mary faced hardship and the Almighty was born in a humble surrounding. In modern world people use this opportunity to send greeting cards and business greeting cards and personalized ecards to their associates and acquaintances too. It has become a tradition to celebrate Christmas with gifts, x mas cards, grand feast and heavy eating. So wish Happy Christmas to all and spread happiness and joy around.
